A Soya free Cockerel is a perfect centre piece! Ideal for feeding the family.

Offered by a regenerative family farm, these substantial table birds are produced by Mark and Pauline Chapple. Despite being told it could not be done, they were the first farm in the UK to rear soya free chicken.

These birds have been reared in mobile chicken tractors and are moved onto fresh pasture daily, following the cattle. The birds having benefitted from a soya free, pasture rich diet, alongside the insects and grubs in the ruminants dung. The benefits of this beta-carotene diet, that the soya free chickens have enjoyed, are shown in the colour of the meat and skin. Rich golden colours, with incredible flavour and succulence.

‘We move our poultry onto fresh pasture every day, meaning they can forage all day long.  The unlimited access to pasture is what gives the meat a lovely yellow colour and creates such delicious and unrivalled flavour’. Mark and Pauline Chapple

These birds are seasonal and will not be available all year round. After January these will not be available again until May.

Description

Amy describes the system her parents used for farming pasture raised soya free cockerels:

‘All of our chicks arrive as day olds, allowing us complete control over their feed. They’re fed a 100% soy-free diet, with the large majority of feed ingredients being grown less than 10 miles away! Our chicks head out to the pasture at 2-4 weeks old, depending on the weather conditions and time of year.’

Chickens originated from jungle fowl, so they naturally feel safer when scratching the soil beneath a protective canopy. This reduces their need to be vigilant to predators so reduces their stress levels. Amy is mimicking this canopy by raising the soya free chickens in covered areas. This makes the chickens feel safer and calmer than they would in open pasture.

The farm are attempting to mimic the processes that would take place in natural grassland systems. They do this through managing the movement of the birds to follow the cows just as large flocks of birds follow behind ruminant species in the wild.

The enrichment of the pasture with soya free chicken dung contributes to the fertility of the soil, enhancing the nutrient profile available to support the ecosystem.
